Mosaic Announces Support For Vancouver Island University’s Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas Planning Advanced Certificate
Nanaimo, BC — Mosaic Forest Management is proud to announce a $50,000 contribution to support First Nations students in the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) Planning Advanced Certificate at Vancouver Island University (VIU).
VIU welcomed their first cohort of students into the IPCA program in 2022. The IPCA program is a comprehensive program relating to protecting and conserving the lands and waters across Canada. Students who graduate from this program will have advanced knowledge of the meaning and purpose of IPCAs and will be able to distinguish between western land use planning and regulatory approaches and Indigenous practices and world views.
The Mosaic-sponsored awards are merit-based, research-focused, and of interest to those involved in land use planning, parks, environmental protection, and conservation or other areas relating to culture, lands, waters, air, and wildlife.
“This donation aligns with Mosaic’s commitment to Indigenous partnerships through increased participation in the forest economy,” said Domenico Iannidinardo, Senior Vice President, Forest & Climate and Chief Forester of Mosaic. “Thank you to VIU and the IPCA Innovation Program for providing this creative way to support Indigenous students in their education and career goals at Vancouver Island University.”
“These generous awards from Mosaic will help Indigenous students who want to play a role in the protection and conservation of lands and waters across Canada advance their educational and professional goals in IPCA planning and management,” said Graham Sakaki, Regional Research Institute Manager at Vancouver Island University. “This program is part of VIU’s commitment to deepening our understanding of Indigenous knowledge and co-creating programming that better serves the priorities of Indigenous communities.”
“Getting this new program started at VIU solidifies the concept of Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas as a formal academic pursuit,” said Monica Shore, Co-Director of the IPCA Innovation Program. “This program will produce alumni steeped in the principles of Indigenous-led conservation and economic theory, which will support the commitments of the newly developed BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative.”
