Mosaic Donation to Adopt-a-School Program Supports Vancouver Island Schools in Need

Nanaimo, BC — Five schools on Vancouver Island will be able to provide meals and improve food security for students in need thanks to a $25,000 donation from Mosaic Forest Management.

The schools in Nanaimo, Royston and Comox all applied for funding through the Vancouver Sun Children’s Fund Adopt-a-School program, and Mosaic was able to support all five proposals through funds made available as part of the company’s efforts to increase community support through the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the main goals of the Adopt-a-School program is to ensure that no child goes hungry. The programs funded by Mosaic’s donation will bring meals and food education to children, at a time when food insecurity has been made even more challenging by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Mosaic has a long history of supporting the communities near our working forests and we are confident that the Vancouver Sun’s Adopt-a-School program will make an important contribution to fighting child hunger on Vancouver Island,” said Domenico Iannidinardo, Mosaic Forest Management’s Vice-President & Chief Forester. “Schools are increasingly working hard to support students beyond their basic academic needs, and supporting this established school-led program will have a lasting influence in the daily lives of kids that just want to focus on learning.”

One of those programs is the food security program at John Barsby Community School in Nanaimo. COVID-19 has resulted in set scheduling requirements for students attending class, creating new structural barriers to accessing meal programs. Mosaic’s financial support will allow the school’s meal program to provide nutritious meals to students in their classroom, through a student-organized, school-wide, no contact delivery network.

“Mosaic’s donation offers us the financial stability to provide a much-needed food program that kids can rely on,” said John Barsby Community School teacher and food security program coordinator, Holly Knox. “The need for inclusive access to nutritious food has never been greater, and we are deeply grateful to know that, with this funding, we will be able to support our food program and our students through the year.”
