Mosaic Staff Speak to Building a Diverse and Welcoming Work Environment
At Mosaic Forest Management, the work continues to bring the values of diversity, equity and inclusion into everything the company does—and into the workday of every member of the team.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) is recognizing and acknowledging that all people are different while being open to diverse perspectives. These principles are rooted in Mosaic’s own DE&I Vision.
Two members of Mosaic’s employee team spoke to the importance of DE&I at the company and what it is helping accomplish.
“Communities are diverse, and our workplaces should reflect that. Each person should be able to participate in the workplace without having to change who they are. Everyone should feel comfortable being their authentic selves at work,” said Bevin Wigmore, Manager of Tree Improvement.
Mosaic’s goals to advance DE&I are:
Foster a safe and welcoming work environment
Integrate, measure, and hold to account
Be a community champion
For team members, achieving diversity is about using inclusive language, standing up to inequity when it’s seen, and people taking on the challenge of educating themselves to be aware of their own biases. It’s also about ensuring people have fair access to opportunities and resources, which means recognizing barriers and addressing them.
If each person in the workplace feels they belong, engagement is higher, collaboration is higher, and company performance is better overall—which in the end is good for the individual, the business, and the community.
“High functioning, resilient teams are better capable to take on challenges,” said Wes Fietz, General Manager, Operations, South Island. “The best, resilient teams you can build are diverse teams. Diversity can come from anything. It’s all about different lived experiences and whatever background someone may come from.”
