Mosaic’s Season of Giving Focuses on Food for Islanders Amidst Increasing Need
2024 campaign shares $51,000 with Island schools and community nutrition programs
It’s an astonishing statistic indicative of trying times felt across Vancouver Island and Coastal BC.
Nanaimo’s Loaves and Fishes food bank, a recipient of Mosaic’s Season of Giving campaign, is reporting the number of people accessing their services has increased by a staggering 94% compared to 2020.
“In order to keep up with the need, we need to source over 400,000 pounds of food per month, and the majority of the food we provide to individuals is fresh foods,” said Abby Sauchuk, Director of Development at the Loaves and Fishes food bank.
School-based food and hot lunch programs are also critical for ensuring healthy, nutritious foods are accessible to growing learners. “Keeping kids fed is such an important way to help get them on the right track for learning,” reports staff member Courtney Pratt from Port Hardy Secondary School. Of the 41 Season of Giving recipients this year, nearly half are schools.
News of this year’s Season of Giving efforts was shared on #GivingTuesday, a global movement that works to inspire others to join in the giving while celebrating generosity. In recognition, Mosaic would like to thank the food program volunteers and school leads who help ensure students, seniors, families and the vulnerable don’t go hungry.
Now in its fifth year, Season of Giving has shared over $200,000 since its start. One of Mosaic’s signature community initiatives, Season of Giving continues to have one important goal— to help those doing the important work of providing nutritious food to those who need it.
Mosaic’s 2024 Season of Giving campaign will direct funds to the following schools and community programs:
ADSS Breakfast Club through Alberni District Secondary School
