News & Views from Mosaic I Summer 2022

I am pleased to offer this news update and a summary of Mosaic's activities for summer 2022.

This will be my last newsletter as CEO, with my previously announced departure coming at the end of August. Working with all of you, our partners, stakeholders, contractors, and incredible employees to create Mosaic, through the affiliation of TimberWest and Island Timberlands, has been the privilege of a lifetime.

Together, we have accomplished a great deal on the things that matter most - safety, environment and sustainability, Indigenous relations, and community giving. We were named one of BC's Top Employers because of our commitment to First Nations partnerships, sustainable forest stewardship, collaborative, non-hierarchical culture, and community organizations we support across Coastal BC. We were BC's first forestry company to achieve Progressive Aboriginal Relations Certification from the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business and the first forestry company globally to certify its organizational carbon footprint by the UK's Carbon Trust.

You'll also read about the important steps we are taking to move the BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative forward, a commitment from Mosaic to defer harvesting on 400 square kilometres of our private land to create high-quality, nature-based carbon credits.

There are also updates on activities at the core of the way we do business at Mosaic – our safety awards, providing recreational access by opening our fourteenth campground, our sustainability efforts on Earth Day, and support for Coastal community groups.

We deliver these accomplishments alongside sustainable work in our working forests, thanks to the dedication of everyone on the team. The company is well-positioned to continue as a leader in sustainable timberland management.

Have a safe, healthy, and fire-smart summer.

- Jeff

Mosaic Forest Management has begun the third-party validation and verification audits with SCS Global as the next step in implementing the recently announced BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative. Through a high-quality carbon credit program, the initiative will defer harvesting nearly 40,000 hectares of private land for 25 years, potentially longer.

Carbon credits generated by BigCoast Forest will be certified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the world's most widely used and rigorous voluntary carbon program. In parallel, validation and verification of the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta) are also occurring.

The BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative directly contributes to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Specifically, implementation of the carbon crediting initiative directly contributes to Sustainable Development Goals: 6 Clean Water and Sanitation, 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, 13 Climate Action, 14 Life Below Water, and 15 Life on Land.

A portion of the sale of BigCoast Forest carbon credits proceeds will go to the Pacific Salmon Foundation and the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) Innovation Program to support scientific and First Nations cultural research on the project lands.
