MOSAIC FOREST MANAGEMENT’S SEMI-ANNUAL NEWS UPDATE

Mosaic Forest Management marked its first year in business on November 1 – and looking back on this year, I’m proud of what we have achieved together already through affiliation.

Our vision for Mosaic was to create a stronger business by uniting two great companies, generating benefits for our employees, contractors, shareholders and communities. We made excellent progress on this vision in 2019, despite the many challenges we faced.

Over the past year, we have integrated our management programs, executed on our combined business plan, achieved record performance in safety, expanded Progressive Aboriginal Relations certification to all Mosaic-managed lands, implemented new online access tools, established a new public campsite bringing our total to 12 across Vancouver Island, and unified our donations and sponsorships program that supports so many worthwhile community initiatives.

That we were able to accomplish all this against the headwinds of incredibly challenging market conditions is a testament to the thousands of British Columbians we employ directly and indirectly. The challenges we have faced this year have underscored both how tough this business can be and how important it is to the families and communities on B.C.’s Coast. On November 25, we made the difficult decision to curtail our operations earlier than usual in the face of sustained bad markets. We understand the impacts this has on our employees and particularly our contractors. We are focused on resuming operations as soon as market conditions allow – getting people back to work in our working forests and generating the resources to support all the valuable community initiatives that rely on Mosaic.

I want to thank our employees and contractors for their dedication to moving us forward as one organization, and our partners, stakeholders and customers for their continued support of our company.

Jeff

Water is a vital natural resource, and a top priority both for Mosaic and for our community partners. In particular, Mosaic has formal collaborative relationships with water purveyors who have licences to draw water from sources within our private managed forest lands. Mosaic has created a new portal with information related to water management. It also highlights our partnership with the Regional District of Nanaimo, an example of Mosaic and communities working together for the benefit of everyone. Find out more and watch the video here

250 MILLION TREES & COUNTING: MOUNT NEWTON NURSERY TURNS 40

Established in 1979, Mosaic’s Mount Newton Seed Orchard has made a huge contribution to sustainable forest management on B.C.’s Coast. In its 40 years in operation, the orchard has produced enough seed to grow 250 million seedlings in support of our annual reforestation program – in 2019, 12 million seedlings were planted on Mosaic managed lands. On September 11, Mosaic staff were joined by Government officials and local leaders to celebrate this milestone. PRIVATE MANAGED FOREST PROGRAM REVIEW ADVANCES TO NEXT STAGE

Over the summer, the B.C. Government accepted public input to its review of the Private Managed Forest Program. This is an important process that could have wide ranging impacts on the Coastal forest sector – B.C.’s Coastal industry relies on active forest management on private lands to support jobs, communities and the economy. Thank you to all our employees, contractors and partners who submitted input to this important process. Government has now released a “What We Heard” report to inform the next stages of the review. Mosaic will continue to actively engage with Government on this process, and keep our partners updated. You can also find Government updates on the process on the Engage BC website here
