Forest Practices Board Investigation Concludes Great Bear Rainforest Planning in Compliance
The Forest Practices Board released today their conclusions following a detailed investigation of Mosaic harvest planning and engagement practices on TimberWest’s Tree Farm Licence 47.
The Board report concludes that TimberWest’s practices complied with legislation and plans, progressed in a precautionary manner with respect to old forest and listed plant communities, and demonstrated leadership in development of a Forest Stewardship Plan. It also found that our staff responded quickly to stakeholder concerns and relied on experts to inform planning.
The report also highlights the complexity and uncertainty that forest managers and stakeholders work under to achieve both conservation and timber harvesting objectives, and the challenges TimberWest faced in meeting these objectives in the absence of a finalized Landscape Reserve Design and field guide, which was released after the investigation began.
“The Forest Practices Board review relates to the earliest days of the implementation of the Great Bear Rainforest Agreement and recognizes our commitment to working with stakeholders in the spirit of clarifying ambiguity and seeking better outcomes,” said Jeff Zweig, President and CEO of Mosaic Forest Management. “We look forward as a company to continuing to advance implementation of the Great Bear Rainforest Agreement and demonstrating that balancing economic, social, and environmental objectives is possible.”
