Log Donation Supports Graduation Legacy Projects in Courtenay

Staff from Mosaic Forest Management joined those at Georges P. Vanier Secondary School in Courtenay last week for the installation of a new carved yellow cedar welcome sign at the Comox Valley high school – just in time to welcome the Class of 2020 back for their graduation celebrations.

The design for the sign came from former Vanier student Elizabeth Marriott and was carved by Shea Larking. Mosaic happily accepted the opportunity to donate the 10 metre yellow cedar log for the special project.

“This sign is a legacy graduation project, and has been more than a year in the making,” said G.P. Vanier Vice Principal Lee McKillican. “We are grateful to Mosaic for the donation of this beautiful log, that has provided us the opportunity to make this sign as well as support other legacy projects we have planned.”

The new welcome sign was carved on the face of the cant milled from the centre of the donated log. Two large panels were produced in this process, and the school plans to have a local carver create totems on these pieces, which would also welcome visitors.

“The team at Vanier school have made beautiful use of this yellow cedar log, and each of us will enjoy the history of this project each time we pass by the school,” said Mosaic Vice President and Chief Forester Domenico Iannidinardo. “Our best wishes to the graduating class of 2020, and we hope this new sign provides a great backdrop for many memorable grad photos.”
