Gravel riding? If you haven’t already heard, this new form of riding is like road cycling but without cars (or pavement). Mountain bikes or ‘gravel bikes’ are the steeds of choice, allowing riders to travel the ups and downs of forestry roads and trails to take advantage of views and terrain off the beaten path.

The inaugural race series kicked off with the Mid Island Velo Association (MIVA) Unpaved in Nanoose Bay on August 29, 2021, followed by the Forbidden Gravel Experience near Comox Lake on September 11, and the Burnt Bridge Classic in Duncan closing out the series on September 25.

The events proudly supported Trail Bicycles youth cycling team, United Riders of Cumberland, Cumberland Community Schools Society, Cowichan Basket Society, Vanier High School mountain bike team, and Cumberland Community Forest Society.

“We are proud to have the opportunity to support the Vancouver Island Gravel Series, giving riders the chance to experience some of the most scenic views and challenging trails on the island,” said Pam Jorgenson, Land Use Forester with Mosaic Forest Management. “Providing safe recreational access is a priority for Mosaic, and this race series is an exciting way to do that.”
