Tracking Mosaic’s Carbon Footprint
Tracking Mosaic’s Carbon Footprint
Mosaic Forest Management is committed to measuring its carbon balance transparently and scientifically. Our science-based target is to be net-zero by 2035 across our operations and to become a positive sequestration business.
Our carbon accounting journey began in 2016 when independent auditors, carbon specialists and forest professionals measured and modeled Mosaic’s carbon footprint across its supply chain from seed to customer. We were the first forest company globally to take this approach. We started to make progress against the goal of carbon neutrality, notably by reducing slash pile burning, as reported in our 2019 Sustainability Report.
In late 2018, we committed to expanding our certification of Mosaic’s Scope 1, 2 and selected Scope 3 carbon footprint with the Carbon Trust, a global climate change and sustainability company. In 2021 our organizational footprint was certified, helping us develop the baseline to measure progress as we continue to track emissions and make informed decisions meeting our net-zero carbon goal.
Our Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2022 were 4,668 and 31 tCO2e, respectively. We have reduced our operational emissions through several initiatives, including:
Transitioning to electric vehicles
Managing our hauling fleet through centralized dispatch
Having bio-fuel content in our diesel fuels
Reducing pile burning through improved fiber utilization and chipping initiatives
Upgrading our heavy equipment fleet for greater efficiencies
Maximizing the use of biosolids for removal of carbon and storage in soils
Ordering specialized equipment for our revitalized thinning program
Improved genetic seedling and silviculture practices that increase carbon removals
In addition, Mosaic has improved emission accuracy by using actual fuel consumption figures versus publicly reported average fuel intensities.
Our emissions are certified to ISO 14064-1, CBM-CFS3 and GHG Protocol for Scope 3 emissions, including business travel, contracted forest management services, net biogenic emissions from the growth, processing, transportation and end-of-life of products from own operations.
