New Campground established through Partnership between BC Hydro and Mosaic Forest Management

Nanaimo, BC — A partnership between BC Hydro and Mosaic Forest Management is bringing enhanced and safer camping opportunities to Vancouver Island. The Upper Campbell Reservoir Campground, located upstream from the Strathcona Dam near Campbell River, is planned to open by the end of December, replacing the Strathcona Dam Campground.

The land for the new campground has overlapping ownership between Mosaic Forest Management and BC Hydro, and an agreement between the two companies made the new site possible.

The new Upper Campbell Reservoir Campground will have great views of the watershed.

It was announced in 2018 that BC Hydro’s Strathcona Dam Campground is closing. The site’s immediate proximity to the dam was identified as a safety risk in the event of a severe earthquake, and it was determined the area would better serve as a construction zone for the upcoming Strathcona Dam Water Discharge Project. As more than 30,000 campers visit the campground annually, BC Hydro looked to find a replacement site near the area. The new location was chosen based on a number of accessibility and recreation value factors, and in consultation with First Nations, stakeholders and local governments.

“The new campground  is coming together really well, with about two-dozen campsites, and has great views up the watershed toward Strathcona Provincial Park,” said BC Hydro spokesperson, Stephen Watson. “We appreciate Mosaic’s partnership in supporting us to build and maintain this new campground. The old campground will permanently close on November 30, and we are looking forward to welcoming visitors at the new campground by the end of December.”

“Creating opportunities for safe recreational enjoyment of our private forest lands is a core component of Mosaic’s community partnerships program,” said Mosaic Director Sustainability, Molly Hudson. “Mosaic operates 12 not-for-profit campsites on our lands across Vancouver Island that people can enjoy, and this one, through collaboration with BC Hydro, will be a great addition to our offerings.”
